  • Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records in 1959, 18 years before Canada’s Jully Black was born. But you’d never know it, from listening to this CD, which is her latest.

Black has produced one of the grooviest, retro-Soul records I’ve heard in a long, long time. Think a combination of Atlantic Pop and R&B, delicately wrapped in a 2007’s street-friendly Urban package. It’s grittier than Alicia Keyes, and more of a direct descendant of Motown that Amy Winehouse.
