Person of Interest Arrested

Police have tracked down a “person of interest” in connection with the disappearance of an eldery St Albert couple. 38-year-old Travis Vader was arrested yesterday morning on unrelated outstanding warrants at a home near Niton Junction, west of Edmonton. Vader was questioned all day yesterday about Lyle and Marie McCann who have been missing since July 3. RCMP have not confirmed reports that a second person in the home was also arrested at the same time Vader was taken in.
Surveillance Video of Missing St Albert Couple Released

Security video from the Superstore Gas station in St Albert has been released showing the last time an elderly couple was seen in person. Lyle and Marie McCann have been missing since July 3rd. Their motorhome was found burned out in Edson two days later, and two Prince George BC residents have come forward this week saying they spotted the McCann's missing SUV in that city. However, they claim the local RCMP detachment initially ignored their tip about the vehicle and Alberta license plate.

Mounties in Edson have wrapped up part of their search for a pair of seniors after scouring the bush area around the couple’s burned-out motorhome. Officers are now following up leads and tips as they try to find Lyle and Marie McCann. Police are calling their disappearance “extremely suspicious.” Meanwhile RCMP in Prince George BC say two people have told them they spotted the McCann's SUV in that city within the last four days.

Alberta is famous worldwide for its stunning mountain vistas and wide open spaces, but a U.S. environmental group wants oil-soaked birds to be the image that sticks out in tourists’ minds. San Francisco-based Corporate Ethics International launched a new billboard campaign yesterday that urges would-be visitors to “rethink” planning a trip to Alberta. The billboards compare the oilsands to the Gulf of Mexico disaster.
Katz Recommits $100 Million to Downtown Arena

In a letter to city council on June 29, Darryl Katz is once again committing 100-million-dollars to building a downtown arena....instead of using the money for development of the land around the arena. The letter also says that the cost of construction is significantly less than the first numbers of 400-million-dollars.

Building Demolition Misses Mark

No one was injured after a scheduled tear down of the downtown Mayfair Hotel missed it's mark. Demolition crews had cleared off part of Jasper Avenue near 108th street around 5pm in preparation for the tear down. However, the building didn't fall the way it was supposed and it came crashing down onto the sidewalk and road.
Province Says it will Cover Teacher Raises

Education minister Dave Hancock says the province is reversing its position and will cover a jump in teachers' salaries this fall. School boards will receive $66 million to cover a 6 per cent pay raise to teachers. Both Edmonton and Calgary school boards said if the province didn't cough up the extra cash they would have to lay off hundreds of teachers. Layoff notices had already been handed out to many teachers.
Remains Confirmed as Missing Edmonton Woman

A body that was found in a west end ravine has been confirmed as that of 38-year-old Sheri Lynn Popowich. She was last seen Saturday morning after going for a walk. A search team with dogs located her body in the Westridge ravine Monday night. Edmonton police aren't releasing the autopsy results at this time, and while they are treating Popowich's death as suspicious, they have not ruled out suicide.

Still no sign of an Edmonton woman who went out for a walk on Saturday. As a result the case has been turned over to the missing persons unit and a command post for search and rescue crews has been set up in west Edmonton. Teams began searching the area around the Westridge Ravine yesterday for 38-year-old SherryLynn Popovich.
