The next big step has been taken, by Darryl Katz, toward a new, downtown arena.  Although to say he’s building a “rink” would be a dramatic understatement.  After all, his plan calls for TWO arenas, hotels, office space, nightclubs, casinos, high-rise residential and retail.  What a list!  Doesn’t this make the Katz plan sound like a modern-age boomtown?  Not unlike the gold rush heritage that Edmonton should be so proud of.  Edmonton’s downtown could truly become a destination again.  Now, with this official application for rezoning will come the typical hand-wringing from

Just when downtown arena chatter seems to be dying down... Daryl Katz takes to the internet!  No new information here... it looks like Katz is just trying to keep people yapping.  It is nice to see Katz talking - without talking through somebody. WATCH

Consensus.  It’s essential to getting things done, in business.  And it will be a vital ingredient, if the Darryl Katz plan to construct a new, downtown arena is to go ahead.  Katz is doing his part…leading the way in the fight for a new, 400 million dollar arena, of which he’s willing to kick in a quarter of the cash.  The rest would come from the other levels of government.  Ah…and therein lies the rub.  What has to happen now is for Ottawa and The Province of Alberta to agree to step up

New Dowtown Arena Just A Matter Of Time

The interesting thing about Daryl Katz's media conference announcing his acquisition of the Edmonton Oilers  wasn't all the right things he said about why he wanted the NHL team, but rather the urgency with which he said he wants to see a new downtown sports and entertainment complex.His exact words were "..as soon as possible."
